Former Liverpool and PSG defender Mamadou Sakho has confirmed his departure from Montpellier before the expiration of his contract. This news comes as no surprise, as Sakho had recently caused an incident that he couldn’t resolve if he stayed at Montpellier.

Sakho, a 33-year-old former French international with 29 caps, has been with Montpellier since 2021, and the parties have now ended their collaboration. The issue began a few days ago when Sakho, in a fit of anger, grabbed Montpellier’s manager, Michel Der Zakarian, and knocked him down during a training session.

Following the altercation on October 24, Montpellier’s management confirmed that they had terminated Sakho’s contract. In response, Sakho revealed that he is no longer part of Montpellier.

Through his personal Instagram account, Sakho shared the message: “In a way, you have to know when to leave the table when you’re no longer being served respect. After the incident in training last week, I take full responsibility for myself and have decided not to continue contributing to Montpellier.”

“For the past two years, I’ve played for the club as if it were my second home. I’ve been thrilled to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with fantastic teammates. At this point, I would like to express my gratitude to the medical staff, the fans, technical director Bruno Carotti, and especially President Laurent Nicollin. I came to Montpellier as a grown man and am leaving the same way. I wish the team success at the end of the season,” Sakho concluded.
