Raphael Varane has expressed his thoughts on who Manchester United should hire if they decide to part ways with manager Erik ten Hag.
At the moment, Ten Hag’s future is in doubt following a string of poor performances by Manchester United. A recent 0-3 defeat to Newcastle in the League Cup has left many Red Devils fans frustrated with the former Ajax boss, leading to calls for a managerial change.
Zinedine Zidane has emerged as a strong candidate who could take the hot seat at Manchester United if the club decides to part ways with Ten Hag. Varane himself has previously spoken positively about the French legend.
In an interview with The Times, Varane shared, “I will give you the details! It was a crazy moment in my life! I played for the first team, and the club knew I had to be sold. So when Zizou called me, I was swamped, and at first, I didn’t even realize it was him.
When I recognized Zidane, I was shocked. ‘Wow!’ It was crazy, so I asked him to call me back another day because I was busy and shocked. Zidane is very humble and ordinary, so he is very understanding.
Ten seconds later, I called my brother and told him, ‘You won’t believe what I just did! It’s crazy, crazy!’ For our generation, if you ask, ‘Tell me about a football player,’ that’s Zizou. He’s the most famous and respected player.”
In theory, Zidane seems like a suitable fit for Manchester United in terms of reputation and class. Currently, the French legend remains without a new managerial position since leaving Real Madrid in 2021. However, if he were to agree to move to Old Trafford, it would indeed be a significant gamble for Zidane, as many managers have come to Manchester United only to see their careers derailed.
