Wout Weghorst scored the decisive goal as the Netherlands defeated the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in the final Euro 2024 qualifying match on the evening of November 18.

In the 12th minute, after a well-timed pass from his teammate, Weghorst shot into the top corner to score the match’s only goal. The former Man Utd striker netted his eighth goal in 28 international appearances. In September’s first-leg match on the Republic of Ireland’s turf, Weghorst also sealed a 2-1 victory for the Netherlands.

On loan from Burnley, Weghorst had previously played for Man Utd in the latter part of the 2022-2023 season. The 31-year-old striker scored two goals in 31 appearances for the Red Devils, helping them secure the League Cup and reach the FA Cup final. After not being permanently signed by Man Utd, Weghorst moved on to Hoffenheim. In the first 11 games of the 2023-2024 season, he scored three goals for the German club.

After taking the lead, the Netherlands continued to dominate the game. However, the home team lacked efficiency in creating chances and finishing. Xavi Simons and Cody Gakpo had opportunities but couldn’t overcome the Republic of Ireland’s defenders and goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu.

In the 52nd minute, Tijani Reijnders’ long-range shot hit Bazunu’s hand, rebounded off the post, and went out. In the 68th minute, after a cross from Gakpo, Denzel Dumfries rushed in but missed the shot right before the goalkeeper.

The Republic of Ireland organized a few counterattacks but couldn’t get past Virgil Van Dijk and his teammates. Adam Idah’s shot rebounded off goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, causing the ball to cross the goal line, but it was not recognized due to an offside violation.

The Netherlands couldn’t add another goal despite solid pressure in the final minutes. The match ended with a 1-0 score, securing the home team’s spot in Euro 2024. The Netherlands currently sits in second place in Group C with 15 points after seven matches, ahead of third-placed Greece by three points and head-to-head performance. With only one match left, Greece cannot catch up.

France and the Netherlands secured the two spots in Group B, while Greece will participate in the playoff stage for a chance to qualify. Meanwhile, with six points and zero points, the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar bid farewell to the tournament.
